Winter caravanning – ever tried it?

With advances in technology and built-in facilities, gone are the days of chilly caravans and discomfort. Still, even though you’ll be cosy inside, to truly experience wonderful winter touring, the main point to remember when it comes to caravanning in the colder months is that you need to prepare.

Unless you’re an experienced and confident caravanner, avoid terrain that could leave you stranded if the weather takes a turn for the worse. Stick to motorways and level ground for the most part, rather than heading for Peak or Lake District delights. Save them for the summer.

Below, you’ll find a mix of destinations that are begging for lucky caravanners to make the most of off-season, quiet holidays. No fair weather types, here.

Head for the Hebrides

Travel north for winter? Are we mad? No, is the easy answer. Scotland plays host to some of the most stunning scenery, but the weather is incredible, too!

Stornoway in the Outer Hebrides is drenched in 1224 hours of sun a year, surrounded by beaches like nothing you’ve seen. What’s even better is that they’re often empty at this time of year, so you can make the most of your own blissful expanse of beauty before retiring back to the tourer.

Following a short amount of Googling and research, it won’t be long before you’re booking the ferry to Barra or any of the other incredible islands up there!

Sensational city break

Birmingham provides walks aplenty and spectacular sightseeing or birdwatching

Just south of Birmingham on the A435, Chapel Lane Caravan Club Site is far enough removed from the hustle and bustle to give you some real peace and quiet on site, but close enough to the city centre so that you can make the most of the endless attractions, whatever the weather.

That’s the great thing about being so close to a city – you’re covered if it’s raining but Birmingham, for example, has so much beauty and splendour around every corner that it’ll provide walks aplenty and spectacular sightseeing or birdwatching on its many towpaths and canal routes.

Delightful weather down south

Of course, the obvious opinion is to head south for the good weather and as much warmth as possible, even in winter. However, you can never really be sure of heat and happiness in the off-season. Or can you…

The Eden Project, Cornwall’s most eco-friendly attraction, offers the best of both worlds, enabling you to enjoy all the benefits of a winter wonderland while still experiencing the warmth of a tropical environment.

The Eden Project has scheduled Christmas festivities for all, as well as its usual eco-friendly family fun for everyone. Pitch up nearby and you’re sure to enjoy a packed seasonal schedule without the worry of catching a chill.
